Sussex is home to the highest of England’s chalk ramparts – Beachy Head. Known as Beau Chef by the Normans, it marks the end of the popular South Downs Way…do remember to stop! Sussex was the springboard to conquest by William I, who routed King Harold, at Battle. Then west to the peace of Cuckmere Haven, where the Cuckmere joins the sea via fabulous countryside.

Great castles and stunning gardens make Sussex both exciting and relaxing to explore. Ancient Bodiam Castle is one of the most romantic in England and Arundel and Lewes stand guard over their towns. Sussex gardens can take on the world. Contemporary Merriments is a fine foil to Borde Hill, Sissinghurst, Nymans and Pashley Manor, among many others.

Let’s play Pooh sticks. Sussex was home to A.A. Milne, who set the adventures of Pooh bear and his friends in Ashdown Forest. At Batemans, in Burwash, Rudyard Kipling was inspired to bring us the Jungle Book and the Just So Stories.

The Romans were fond of Sussex. The truly beautiful Fishbourne Palace is testament to this. And George IV adored his Royal Pavilion, at Brighton – still a cosmopolitan, fun-loving seaside town. Inland, Petworth House is one of England’s finest.
